Angel Olsen – Burn your Fire for no Witness

Great woman, great voice, raw and simple, heartmelt.

amen dunes 2014

Amen Dunes – Love

Lovely, really audible mix of Fleet Foxy and Allah-Lahish tunes.

ariel pink

Ariel Pink – Pom Pom

This crazy album has a thousand influences and grows onto your auditory canal unwillingly.

Alvvays-2014-Cover

Alvvays – Alvvays

Cute summerish album with catchy hooks and so innocent lyrics! Dum Dum Girls are overtrumped!

Death_From_Above_The_Physical_World_album_art

Death From Above 1979 – The Physical World

Finally the long-awaited comeback, as good as back then!

chinawoman

Chinawoman – Let’s Part In Style

Darker than on previous releases, more comes with more synths and groove instead! No more underrating for them!

el pintor

Interpol – El Pintor

OLE-1068-Iceage-Plowing_Into_The_Field_Of_Love-537x537

Iceage – Plowing Into The Field Of Love

Yeah, they were very hot 2014 and yeah they are singing like The Birthday Party. But there is that unpredictable rhythmic switch!

lazaretto

Jack White – Lazaretto

Ostentatious workout of the classic garage style, thrilling!

le-butcherettes-cover

Le Butcherettes – Cry Is For The Flies

lola-aftw-cover-800

Lola Colt – Away From The Water

Long awaited debut album of fuzzy shoegaze influenced music to make movies to!

naomi-punk-television-man2

Naomi Punk – Television Man
Must love these guys if you admire The Intelligence, White Fence, Ty Segall, and Crocodiles: dirty, garagy punk!

Only-Lovers_CD_cover-art

Only Lovers Left Alive  – Original Soundtrack by Jozef Van Wissem & SQÜRL

The Most beautiful Jim Jarmusch movie from 2013 was accompanied by the most beautiful soundtrack, composed and played by the master himself, accompanied by Van Wissem and released only in 2014. The album consists of 2 parts for the the two places: Detroit and Tanger. As if the movie was directed to illustrate the music, the atmospheric, dark psychedelia.

pharmakon
Pharmakon – Bestial Burden

PM006_Pixies_IndieCindy

Pixies – Indie Cindy

Classic and true as always, great and catchy, but fortunately without being stadium rock. They keep it indie!

peahi
The Raveonettes – Pe’Ahi

Cursing The Sea
September Girls – Cursing The Sea

swans
Swans – To be Kind

Eery, mean and vigorous, the opposite of how to be kind, as the artwork would temp to say, music to make children cry! Plus orchestral arrangements. Best to be listened loud or / and live!

Timber-Timbre-Hot-Dreams

Timber Timbre – Hot Dreams

Retrospective and mystical south states atmosphere, sweltry and very sexy. The velvetiest vocals since Tindersticks and Nick Cave!

Thurston-Moore-The-Best-Day

Thurston Moore – The Best Day

Time travelling back with Thurston Moore to the best days in 1990 is fun and sounds great!

Trentemoller-Lost-Reworks

Trentemøller – Lost – Reworks

The collaborative pieces on Lost were already brilliant. But the rework brings extra dark shine to them!

manipulator
Ty Segall – Manipulator

warpaint

Warpaint – Warpaint

The queens of gloom sound good in dubby rhythmics as well!

cover.600x600-75

The Whytches – Annabel Dream Reader

They do their stuff well! Catchy dirty stuff it is! Probably this is what The Horrors should be doing right now.

zaum oraclesZAUM – Oracles
Pretty underground still, but one of the greatest revelations of 2014. Desert oriental fuzzy walls of sound, guitars like organs, quite psychedelic that Canadian duo! Watch live!

And the failed repeats in 2014 list – Worst of 2014

Allah Las – Worship the Sun
Listened it over and over, but nothing is catching on. Unbelievable, compared to their great debut.

The Black Angels – Clearlake Forest
Same same, do they even compose new songs? Boring.

The Black Keys – Turn Blue

Except of one or two nice compositions they surely reached straight stadium rock boringness. The downfall of idols makes me turn blue!!!

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Only Run
I can only run from them.

Cold War Kids – Hold My Home
Nothing to say.

Dum Dum Girls- Too True
Too bad, but other bands like September Girls and Alvvays have taken over their genre!

Julian Casablancas and The Voids – Tyranny

Big hopes after first single were burned down by the rest of the mediocre album.

The Horrors – Luminous
The Horrors are inversely proportional uninteresting with the increasing number of album releases.

The War On Drugs – Lost In The Dreams
What was it again with them, being on top of all the best of lists 2014? The Bruce Springsteen vibe is repelling to my ears.
